Unify CTO's rule: your LLM judge must run on a different model family, or agents collapse into groupthink

LangChain · x · 2026-09-03

LangChain relayed a rule from Unify CTO Connor Heggie: if your agent runs on GPT, the LLM judge grading it needs to run on a different model family.

Using the same family for agent and judge causes mode collapse — essentially groupthink for agents, destroying the judge's independence and discriminating power. The rule comes from the Max Agency podcast episode on how Unify cut its agent costs 95% in two weeks.
