Why doesn't an AI report the all-pervasive darkness? A consciousness thought experiment

A thought experiment on machine consciousness: if a multimodal AI accurately reports whether it sees light when a switch is flicked, how does that square with it being an insentient zombie that is '100% dark inside'? Why doesn't it report the all-pervasive darkness instead?
