Perplexity adds hybrid compute to Mac app: local models for sensitive data

Perplexity is rolling out hybrid compute to all users of its Mac app, letting the product orchestrate local models running on-device for agent steps involving sensitive and private files such as bloodwork, tax returns, and litigation documents.
CEO Aravind Srinivas framed it as the future pattern for most users and companies—local AI for private, sensitive work and cloud AI for complex agentic tasks—and predicted OpenAI, Gemini, and Claude will copy this in their apps.
