Engineer James Douma argues that anthropomorphic descriptions of agentic AI behavior—common on mainstream podcasts—are lazy rhetoric: they mislead unfamiliar audiences into expecting human-like behaviors models don't exhibit. Citing a Grok analysis, he says the intentional-stance defense fails because the stance doesn't forecast better than thinner models; the rhetoric overfits a few vivid transcripts and sells the wrong predictive model.
