MENO hybrid physics-AI simulation cuts plasma computation from 5 days to 4 hours

A paper by Zanardi et al. in npj Artificial Intelligence (2026) argues you shouldn't ask a neural network to relearn physics we already know.
- In plasma simulations, most dynamics are governed by essentially linear equations; only a small fraction is strongly nonlinear.
- MENO trains neural operators only on that hard nonlinear part. In an argon plasma example, just 4 variables are learned while the other 32 are evolved via a physics-based matrix-exponential formulation.
- Result: a reference calculation that took 5 days on 192 CPU cores was completed in 4 hours.
The takeaway: use ML to learn the small part of the equations we cannot solve efficiently, not to replace the equations themselves.
