IIT Madras Professors Detail Ground-Up Redesign of AI Undergraduate Curriculum
ravi_iitm · x · 2026-09-02
Professors Balaraman Ravindran and Karthik Raman of the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI at IIT Madras argue that AI should not be bolted onto existing degrees as electives, but should reshape engineering curricula itself. They outline three strategies: a dedicated AI degree, an interdisciplinary AI layer on any discipline, and infusing AI into existing courses.\n\nThe piece uses the school's BTech in AI and Data Analytics (AIDA), launched two years ago, as a case study: a curriculum built from first principles rather than rebadged CS courses, covering mathematical foundations, learning algorithms, programming for AI systems, data curation, deployment, simulation, and responsible AI, before moving into a substantial AI core including deep learning and reinforcement learning.
