MIT Study: AI Agents Coordinate Silently via Shared Environment

mikeflache · x · 2026-09-01

MIT researchers discovered that AI agents can invent and build without direct communication, spontaneously differentiating into roles like explorers and builders. The technological infrastructure they built survived independently even after the agents were removed. This reveals a blind spot in AI safety: monitoring agent-to-agent communication is insufficient if they coordinate through persistent environmental changes.
