Study: Current ML models fail to distinguish functional protein sequences

The largest experimental protein sequence-fitness dataset, comprising 13k measurements across 3 proteins, reveals that fitness landscapes are rugged and many functional sequences exist between orthologs. The study concludes that current ML models cannot distinguish between functional and non-functional sequences.
