Sony and Warner sue Anthropic over previously admitted piracy
Servola-Journal · reddit · 2026-08-31
Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell sued Anthropic, citing the same pirated downloads Anthropic admitted to in the previous Bartz case. The complaint links those downloads (5M+ books via BitTorrent by co-founder Mann) to MusixMatch and LyricFind lyric datasets. Statutory damages could reach $150,000 per work. The case raises questions about whether settling one IP class action creates permanent exposure for any other rightsholder whose work is found in the same pirated corpus.
