£50 and 6 Hours: Air-Gapped Home Replacement for Frontier Chat UIs on a 5090

A UK tinkerer (previously featured at a security conference for vibe coding risks) ran a new experiment: on a single RTX 5090, in 6 hours and £50 of API credits (using GPT-5.6 and Fable for the heavy lifting), with zero lines of code personally read or written, he built Sovereign — a local app visually on par with frontier labs' consumer UIs from 6-12 months ago.

Stack: Qwen 3.8 27B (NVFP4 quantized, ninfer runtime), fully air-gapped, zero telemetry, zero subscriptions.

Features: dynamic split-pane artifacts (isolated iframes running interactive JS/HTML), inline reactive charts in chat, local Postgres via MCP plus Python arithmetic verification (one prompt ran SQL over his pension transactions, sanity-checked the math, and returned a table), a self-recovering web scraping agent, and vision/OCR. He calls Qwen 3.8 "a god with tool use". Not open-sourced yet since he hasn't audited a single line himself.
