Firecrawl (YC backed) released OCRIt, an open-source browser extension that converts non-copyable PDFs to AI-readable Markdown in 20ms. Based on Tesseract, it runs 100% offline without API keys or permissions. It claims to be nearly 300x faster than Docling while maintaining similar quality. OCRIt offers manual selection and auto-scroll modes, intelligently stopping at duplicate pages. Tests show it excels with simple layouts but struggles with complex mixed content like formulas and tables.
