UCL, Cambridge, Oxford, and Edinburgh University have announced the formation of the Science of Fundamental AI Research (SOFAIR) Lab, the largest ever government investment (£30M) in a UK university AI Lab, led by Prof. David Barber.
Context: Most frontier AI models are currently developed outside the UK, relying on increasing compute with limited exploration of alternative architectures.
Mission: SOFAIR aims to change this by bringing together leading researchers to develop novel AI architectures combining expertise in Statistics, Mathematics, Neuroscience, and Computer Science, driving the creation of transparent, efficient, and trustworthy foundation models.
