$150 AI 'Self-Driving' Microscope Diagnoses Acute Leukemia

Researchers developed an AI "self-driving" microscope for acute leukemia diagnosis costing only $150, versus $300,000 for whole-slide scanners. A 3D-printed attachment converts conventional microscopes into automated scanners. Trained on 130,000+ annotated cells and validated across 165 slides, it achieves AUC >0.99 for detecting diagnostic regions and pathologist-level blast counts in <1 minute. This highlights closing the implementation gap with affordable hardware rather than larger models.
