Anthropic releases Model Hardware Standard for AI agents to control lab instruments
EricTopol · x · 2026-08-28
Anthropic has released a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a shared specification enabling AI agents to safely operate physical devices like microscopes, liquid handlers, and robotic arms. MHS addresses the integration challenges in labs and manufacturing, reducing setup times from weeks or months to minutes. It allows agents to perform complex tasks such as drug discovery experiments and quantum computer calibration. The standard is model-agnostic, works with programmable interfaces, and supports standard protocols like MCP. It is currently available to partners with plans to open source it later.
