US data centers face 17-29 GW power load gap by 2026
BenBajarin · x · 2026-08-28
Analysis suggests US data centers could theoretically 'absorb' 17-29 GW of new facility load in 2026 and 12-30 GW in 2027. These figures include cooling and other site overhead. The ceiling ultimately depends on whether BTM and FTM projects come online on time. If storage or DR helps meaningfully, or smaller markets are credited, there is plenty of capacity to tap. Note: NERC is inherently conservative, so headroom could be bigger.
