How 'Making It Worse' Made $20M: The Tech Behind Bodycam

A 17-year-old and his brother made $20 million with their game Bodycam by leveraging a core insight about the human brain: it judges combat realism based on camera fingerprints, not visual fidelity. Instead of hand-modeling, they used photogrammetry libraries to 3D scan real-world assets. Crucially, they then intentionally degraded the image with fisheye distortion, chromatic aberration, motion smear, and compression artifacts. Since brains primarily experience combat through cameras, these 'flaws' trigger a stronger realism response than perfect graphics, a technique the industry missed for twenty years.
