Anthropic's Model Hardware Standard lets AI agents control physical devices

Anthropic has launched a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a set of standardized drivers designed to let AI agents easily interface with and control arbitrary hardware devices — no bespoke "translator" program needed between them.
In the official demo, a researcher reacts in surprise as Claude figures out how to make a robot arm pick up an aluminum can. MHS provides a common interface and data-sharing format so devices can talk to each other across a network. It is initially aimed at scientists, streamlining the custom software integrations often required to make disparate experiment components work together — marking agentic AI's first standardized step from the digital world into physical control.
