Anthropic unveils Model Hardware Standard, letting AI agents operate lab and factory equipment

Anthropic has introduced the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), enabling AI agents to directly operate programmable lab and factory equipment such as microscopes, robotic arms, and liquid handlers, potentially enabling autonomous scientific experiments and 24/7 manufacturing workflows. Early results include an AI-designed controller at QuEra that restored a critical quantum device. Anthropic is sharing an early version with partners in science, robotics, electronics, and manufacturing to collaborate on safety evaluations and best practices before open-sourcing the standard.
