Early Hires of Stripe, OpenAI and Figma Share 3 Signals of Top 1% Startups

Seed investor Terrence Rohan and Lenny Rachitsky interviewed five early employees who each joined at least two iconic companies (Stripe, Palantir, OpenAI, Spotify, Figma, Notion, Slack, Facebook) before they were famous, distilling three core signals.
First, ambition bordering on absurdity: Palantir and OpenAI were both laughed at early, yet "if everyone agrees it's a good idea and you have competitors on day one, you're already behind." Second, founders above everything — more than intelligence, what matters is adaptability (rate of change / clock speed), ferocity, and founder-market fit. Third, don't judge by today's product: Facebook, Figma and Slack were rough early on (Spotify started as video, Figma as a meme generator); focus on mission, rabid customer love, and a demo that feels like glimpsing the future (the "Jurassic Park moment"). Notably, none of the five landed these jobs via applications — they optimized for serendipity.
