Long Read: Why Rigorous Thinking About the Future Always Leads to Extreme Outcomes

This essay argues that any rigorous thinking about the long-term future inevitably leads to extreme outcomes. By definition, a model of the world transitions through states until it stabilizes. In an existential sense, the only stable states are extremes—heaven or hell—meaning serious futurism cannot produce mundane or normal futures.
