ML researcher returns to academia: know the trade-offs before you choose a PhD
tw_killian · x · 2026-08-27
Taylor W. Killian, on his first day as a BYU CS professor, reflects on pivoting from a decade-long dream of corporate research labs back to academia. He argues the panicked academia-vs-industry duality is short-sighted, and that academia still offers two things industry didn't: open-ended research he defines himself and dedicated mentoring of students.
His blunt advice: academia can be rewarding long-term, but funding pressure, workload, uncertainty and personal trade-offs are far harder than most PhD students realize. Don't choose academia as the default next step—go in with your eyes open.
