AI search doesn't care about your website: 68% of Google searches now end without a click

An Ad Age piece argues the covenant Google struck with brands in 1998 — make your site crawlable and we'll send traffic — is breaking as search evolves from link lists into frictionless AI interfaces. A 2026 SparkToro study finds 68% of Google searches produce zero clicks.

Visibility now depends more on how machines read your site's structure than on the content brand teams spent years optimizing. The machine reads what's underneath: ARIA labels, accessibility attributes, structured data (this is a price, this is a product), API endpoints. The marketer's question shifts from "how do we drive traffic?" to "where is our expertise showing up?" — brands winning in AI search build trust everywhere, not just on their own domain.
