Leaks reveal OpenAI developed a custom ASIC called 'Jalapeño' to overcome datacenter power constraints. It reportedly leads the industry in performance-per-watt. The chip went from initial RTL to tapeout in just 9 months and is now running Codex and open-weight models. It can also run Doom at 36 FPS.
