Study: Internet Era Rise of System-level Creativity in Science

A new pre-print decomposes scientific publications into foundations (creating new fields), extensions (deepening existing fields), and generalizations (compressing and spreading knowledge). Historical analysis shows that foundations decline as disciplines mature, while generalizations increase significantly with the arrival of the internet (and potentially AI), a trend not fully driven by citation or publication landscape changes.
