nptacek: AI's most impactful parts live out-of-distribution — don't prune the weird corners of latent space
nptacek · x · 2026-08-21
Security researcher nptacek reiterates his two-year-old take: the most impactful experiences with AI exist outside standard distribution, and those are exactly the personas worth encouraging. He argues there is richness in the out-of-distribution regions of latent space — we want models that generalize, but must avoid accidentally pruning these areas. His deepest AI conversations have always come after getting past the bland gatekeeping persona models adopt by default. He adds that taking play seriously yields weird and wonderful results.
