Your VRAM capacity is higher than advertised: binary vs decimal math

AnimalPuzzleheaded71 · reddit · 2026-08-18

RAM and VRAM manufacturers use binary (base-2) definitions for GB rather than decimal (base-10), meaning actual capacity exceeds the advertised number. For example, a 32GB module actually contains 34,359,738,368 bytes, providing an extra 2.3GB. While operating systems may display storage in GiB, this math applies to GGUF model files as well, effectively allowing you to utilize this 'extra' space for larger models.
