AI makes bioweapons offense-dominant? The evidence says otherwise
anshulkundaje · x · 2026-08-18
Pushing back on the claim that AI makes bio-security offense dominant, @ramez argues bio-security has been overwhelmingly defense dominant up to now — there has never been a mass-casualty bioweapons attack, and immune systems plus societal capability constantly fight evolving pathogens.
AI may change that, but the burden of proof lies on those who believe it will: it's easy to underestimate biology's complexity, and the overwhelming majority of precise biological interventions fail. Claims that AI is about to solve cancer or double longevity are ludicrous; bioweapons may be somewhat easier, but far from certain.
