Tsinghua research: Quantifying neural network simplicity via polynomial representations

jiqizhixin · x · 2026-08-17

Researchers from Tsinghua University have developed a method to quantify neural network "simplicity" by shrinking complex networks into a compact, readable summary using polynomial math. This "simplicity score" outperforms current standards like "sharpness" in predicting generalization across various tasks and models. When applied as a regularizer, it improves results in image, text, and reinforcement learning tasks and aids in fine-tuning vision-language models.
