Paper Shows LLMs Cost 1431x More for Embeddings with Marginal Quality Gain
krishnan · x · 2026-08-17
A paper titled 'The Embedder's Dilemma: LLMs are better at what cost?' benchmarks ten LLMs against 26 embedding models on 37 tasks, finding nearly tied quality (77.6 vs 77.2) but a huge cost difference: $154 per benchmark pass for LLMs vs $0.11 for embedding models, a 1431x multiplier. The author argues this is not an engineering trade-off but a category error about where value comes from, and the market should correct quickly.
