Philosophy Journal Knowingly Publishes Largely AI-Authored Paper

The philosophy journal Philosophy & Public Affairs recently and knowingly published an academic article written mostly by Anthropic's Claude.
The core thesis was provided by Simon Goldstein, an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Hong Kong. He stated that he worked with Claude like a "heavy-handed supervisor writes with a PhD student": he focused the topic, developed arguments, corrected errors, and approved drafts, while Claude did the actual writing.
Publisher Wiley's current guidelines do not allow AI systems to be listed as authors. However, substantial AI use for text generation is not grounds for rejection if properly disclosed and a human author takes responsibility. Thus, Claude's contribution is only mentioned in the acknowledgments.
