Data Centers Aren't Causing Residential Rate Hikes: Power Plant Stocks Plunge

A cited analysis argues that data centers are not causing electricity rate increases for residential consumers, contrary to popular belief.

Market expectations assumed existing power plant operators would profit massively from the data center boom. However, the opposite has occurred: major operators like $CEG (-21%), $NRG (-25%), and $VST (-10%) are down big this year. Because data centers are increasingly building their own off-grid power generation rather than pulling from the existing grid, the anticipated cost pass-through to residential ratepayers has not materialized.
