A designer has published an in-depth retrospective on creating the new icon system for Cursor, the popular AI coding agent. The project spanned a year and covers over 600 icons in two sizes and styles, with every variant drawn by hand.

Outgrowing VS Code: Cursor initially inherited the open-source Codicons set from VS Code. As the product evolved, this patched-up set became unmanageable.
New Visual Vocabulary: AI-native concepts like agents, parallel execution, thinking effort, and compute cost required entirely new icons that no existing library offered.
Obsessive Details: The designer explained the rationale behind maintaining consistency across hundreds of icons, choosing an unusual 1.25px stroke weight, and drawing 156 variations of a single hamburger icon.
Seamless Migration: The final system was delivered as an icon font designed to replace the old set without breaking a single existing code reference.
