Non-Technical Users Wield AI Agents: Data Engineering Faces Disruption and Risks

The author argues that data engineering is following the path of software engineering: work will shift from senior experts to non-technical folks closer to the daily business problems, as they can iterate faster using coding agents.

However, while agents amplify human capability, they also amplify negative outcomes. A non-technical person with Claude Code and a database can find answers to business questions faster than an army of data engineers, but there is no guarantee the answers will be correct—or that the database will still be intact afterwards.
