MIT Professor Advocates for 'Intelligence Augmentation' Over Replacing Humans

Pattie Maes of the MIT Media Lab argues that AI R&D should pivot towards IA, or "intelligence augmented." She believes the AI community is too focused on building machines that replace humans, rather than using technology to help people become better versions of themselves.

Her Fluid Interfaces group combines psychology, AI, human-computer interaction, and neuroscience to design systems that seamlessly integrate into daily life. Moving beyond merely delivering information, these systems aim to actively enhance core cognitive and emotional capacities like memory, critical thinking, and learning through phones, wearables, and laptops.
