Researcher Criticizes Frontier Models for Hiding Reasoning Traces, Calls for Open AI Science

Researcher rao2z points out that much of the current confusion surrounding LLM reasoning chains of thought stems from a studied silence maintained by frontier model developers (with the exception of DeepSeek R1).

He criticizes the practice of hiding full reasoning processes and only showing cherry-picked examples. He argues that in an open science environment, researchers wouldn't need to rely on accidental jailbreaks to uncover questionable claims about reasoning traces tacitly supported by frontier companies, nor would they pursue fruitless research anthropomorphizing these traces.
