Academic Shifts View: Under 5% Chance AI Hits a Wall, Expects Full Labor Substitution

An academic shared a major shift in his perspective on AI capabilities over the past two years in a message to friends.
He previously believed it was plausible that AI would hit a fundamental capability wall this decade. However, as progress has continued, he now assesses this probability as very unlikely (under 5%). His core argument is that previous technologies were merely tools requiring intelligent agents (humans) to operate, making them complementary to human labor. Current AI, however, is evolving into intelligent agents itself, breaking the historical pattern and creating the potential to fully substitute human labor rather than just complement it.
