AI Splits into Three Markets: Closed APIs, Open Weights, and Routing
Justgototheeffinmoon · reddit · 2026-08-13
The recent releases from xAI, Alibaba, and Nvidia look like the same race but represent three fundamentally different business models:
- xAI (Grok 4.6): A closed API product. Its leverage comes from controlling access and setting token prices.
- Alibaba (Qwen3.8): An open-weight release. Its leverage stems from adoption by organizations wanting to operate or adapt models themselves.
- Nvidia: A routing layer that dispatches jobs to the cheapest capable model, influencing demand without owning the underlying models.
The article argues that the routing layer is becoming the most critical moat. It learns where models are interchangeable, how suppliers perform under real workloads, and when cheaper models suffice. However, this complicates accountability: if a routed output causes harm, buyers will struggle to trace exactly which model executed the task and under what policy.
