OpenAI Researcher Weighs In on Debate: Is AI Already Replacing Entry-Level Jobs?

OpenAI researcher Dave Holtz shared his perspective on the highly debated "pyramid replacement" theory—whether AI is killing entry-level jobs. There are currently two conflicting views in the academic literature:
- Stanford's Warning: An updated paper by Erik Brynjolfsson and co-authors, Canaries in the Coal Mine, suggests that while we aren't seeing massive overall job displacement from AI yet, there is a noticeable slowing in the job market for entry-level workers at the bottom of the organizational pyramid.
- LSE's Counter-argument: Research by Sarah Bana at LSE argues that the decline in employment for entry-level workers actually started before ChatGPT was launched in late 2022. Although highly correlated with AI exposure, it may not be directly caused by generative AI.
