Study Reveals Shared High-Dimensional Object Spaces in Human and Macaque Visual Cortex

A preprint study on bioRxiv investigated the similarities and differences in visual object processing between human and macaque inferotemporal cortex (IT).

The researchers applied multivariate cross-species alignment to responses from 8,640 naturalistic object images. The analysis revealed a surprisingly rich, high-dimensional shared geometry that extended beyond coarse correspondences like animacy and shape, including a wide range of interpretable visual and conceptual dimensions.

Unexpectedly, the shared space also uncovered a neural signature for orthography-related content, suggesting precursor mechanisms in macaques. The study also highlighted systematic differences between species in processing living versus artificial categories.
