Deep Learning's Blind Spot: Dynamics of a Single Biased Neuron Solved Only in 2021

Researcher Antonio Orvieto points out that some of the most basic questions in deep learning can remain open for decades. Citing Schmidt Sciences, he highlights a 2021 NeurIPS paper that finally worked out the dynamics of a single artificial neuron with a bias term using gradient descent.
- Theoretical Lag: Despite massive empirical success in deep learning, theoretical understanding of these models remains incredibly difficult and under-explored.
- Scale-Induced Unknowability: Modern large models now hold roughly half a trillion of these neurons. Orvieto suggests that fully understanding them mathematically is almost impossible, which is precisely the appeal of the field.
