How Vercel Migrated Its Core Database Handling 6,000 Deployments Per Minute

Vercel's engineering team detailed how they migrated the database behind every platform build from Redis to DynamoDB, handling up to 6,000 deployments per minute.

Context:

The build warm pool state—tracking container readiness, authentication tokens, and billing mappings—was originally stored in Redis. As the platform grew, keeping critical, non-recoverable state like billing mappings in an ephemeral cache became a liability.

Strategy:

Because containers continuously spin up and expire 24/7, the team couldn't pause the system. They executed the migration live under production traffic, moving through phases controlled by feature flags with rollback readiness.
