Harvard Paper: Assigned Roles Alter How Clinical AI Agents Allocate Resources

A new study from the BRIDGE GenAI Lab at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Harvard Medical School) examines the behavioral patterns of clinical AI agents when allocating shared medical resources.
The research reveals that when AI agents are assigned different roles—such as representing hospital interests versus acting as patient advocates—their decision-making logic in distributing scarce medical resources shifts significantly. Professor Zak Kohane noted in a comment that while the current medical system may not be ready for AI patient advocates, it is a crucial direction for future exploration.
