Research Exposes How Meta Smart Glasses Are Weaponized for Harassment

A University of Sydney research team has published a preprint paper revealing how pickup artists (PUAs) exploit the covert recording capabilities of Meta's smart glasses to harass women in public and upload the footage to Instagram for clout.

Covert Capture Intensifies Harassment

Analyzing 350 videos, researchers found a direct correlation between the covertness of the filming device and the severity of the harassment. These POV videos subject victims to a digital trial, with comment sections frequently filled with misogynistic abuse, creating a long digital tail of harm.

Meta's Governance Failure

Although Meta relies on an LED indicator to prevent covert recording, this safeguard has proven ineffective, with users actively modding the devices to disable the light. Despite Instagram's promise last month to crack down on such content, moderation remains weak, and algorithmic recommendations continue to amplify the harassment. Researchers argue that beyond public backlash, substantive legislation is needed to hold hardware manufacturers and platforms accountable.
