Apple iOS 27 to Introduce Photo Authentication to Combat AI Fakes

ChuckDBrooks · x · 2026-08-12

Apple is developing a new feature called Apple Reference Image (ARI) to combat the growing threat of scams and disinformation caused by highly realistic AI-generated images, reports 9to5Mac.

References to the feature were found in iOS 27 Beta 5. Photos taken with ARI enabled can be uploaded to Apple servers for independent verification of their authenticity. The feature will be off by default and is primarily aimed at professionals like journalists or those in legal proceedings who need definitive proof of photo integrity. While industry standards like C2PA exist, Apple appears to be forging its own path with the ARI system.
