Top Senate Democrat Proposes Excise Tax on AI Data Centers

Sen. Ron Wyden, a top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, has released a draft white paper proposing a new excise tax on hyperscale data center operators and facilities primarily handling AI compute workloads.
The framework seeks to amend the current tax code by removing existing tax incentives for data center construction and introducing the excise tax. The revenue generated would be used to offset consumer burdens associated with the data center boom, such as higher energy prices, workforce disruptions, and broader resource drains.
