ChatGPT Uncovers Deep Family History from Old Insurance Papers
DeviValentine · reddit · 2026-08-12
A Black American user shared how ChatGPT acted as a powerful genealogy tool. Due to historical marginalization, tracing Black family roots is notoriously difficult. However, after the user uploaded photos of old family insurance paperwork (1897–1930s), ChatGPT took the initiative to analyze the clues and dig through historical records.
The AI successfully identified his potential great-great-grandmother, linked the family to a specific 1840s free Black settlement, found marriage records, mapped ancestral property, and even traced Civil War pension details. It even spotted a mention of his grandmother in an old local newspaper. The user accomplished this using only 35% of his work token allowance, proving AI's potential to replace expensive services like Ancestry.com.
