Opinion: AI Content Watermarks Miss the Fundamental Mark
___Patrice___ · x · 2026-08-12
The author argues that current efforts to watermark AI-generated content are fundamentally flawed. A watermark can only indicate that an AI model was used as a tool in the process; it fails to reveal the actual source or nature of the content.
Watermarks cannot distinguish whether the text was merely spell-checked, summarized, slightly reformatted, or entirely spun by the model. They also cannot determine if the original input was ripped off. Thus, relying solely on watermarks is insufficient for tracing AI content origins and verifying authenticity.
