Ajeya Cotra Proposes 'Self-Sufficient AI' as a Sharper Milestone Over AGI

AI researcher Ajeya Cotra suggests that debating whether we have already achieved AGI is largely unproductive, as the definition is too easily watered down in the LLM era.

Instead, she proposes a sharper, less debatable milestone: a completely "self-sufficient AI population." This concept requires not only that AI systems can autonomously perform economically valuable cognitive work, but also that they can manage and maintain the underlying physical infrastructure. This includes the chips they run on, the industrial stack producing them, and the robotics required to build and sustain the entire ecosystem without human intervention.
