Databricks Acquires Electric to Supercharge Postgres Backend for AI Agents
matei_zaharia · x · 2026-08-12
Databricks announced the acquisition of the Electric team (joining the Neon team) to build a comprehensive backend infrastructure tailored for agentic applications.
Electric brings two key technologies that serve as critical primitives in the era of AI agents:
- PGlite: A lightweight WASM Postgres database small enough to run in browsers, sandboxes, and serverless environments. Its weekly downloads surged from 1M to 13M over the past year.
- Real-time sync engine: Keeps data continuously synchronized between a central Postgres database and clients like browser tabs, mobile apps, or agents in a sandbox, which is essential for coordinating state across fleets of agents.
