China's Magnetic Wall-Climbing Robot Uses VR Teleoperation for High-Risk Jobs

China has released a tele-operated wall-climbing robot designed for high-risk environments. Utilizing magnetic adhesion, the robot scales vertical surfaces and uses humanoid arms to perform tasks such as welding, grinding, rust removal, painting, and inspection. It is primarily targeted at dangerous sectors like shipbuilding and chemical tank maintenance.
Operators can teach and control the robot remotely using a VR interface with millisecond latency. Beyond preventing workplace accidents, this teleoperation phase serves a crucial secondary purpose: collecting training data. Once sufficient data is gathered, these robots are expected to transition to fully autonomous operations.
